A productive mine demands the right plant
Thiess has built a reputation for delivering greater value and certainty by introducing efficiencies and continually striving for lower cost mining methods. Using ultra-class mining equipment offers greater economies of scale – integral to lowering costs.
The biggest gear
Nothing illustrates the strength of the relationship between Thiess and client Peabody Energy Australia better than the latest contract to operate the enduring Burton Coal Mine in North Queensland. The secret to our success at the mine is the commitment to using the biggest gear in the business. A second Liebherr R9800 is operating at the mine and being serviced by a fleet of Caterpillar 797 dump trucks. The result of this muscle is the cost-effective removal of overburden, nearly 30 per cent of which is being removed for the second time as we go back into areas of Burton first mined in 1996.
10,000 hours of tyre life
The Thiess Tyre Life Improvement Program is another example of the way our team constantly looks to improve performance. The program has achieved more than 10,000 hours of tyre life on our Caterpillar 793 haul trucks at Lake Vermont. A number of tyres from across our sites have lasted more than 13,000 hours.
