In a State-first move towards more sustainable construction sites in South Australia, CPB Contractors, as part of the Fleurieu Connections Alliance’s delivery of the Main South Road Duplication 2 Project, has commissioned the first hybrid power system at its site compound in Aldinga.
The 20-kW solar array is charged by the sun, and the energy is stored in an on-site battery for access as needed, regardless of weather. The successful installation of this solar array in South Australia marks a significant milestone for the state and is part of a larger CPB Contractors-wide push towards sustainability and its net zero commitments.
CPB Contractors Sustainability Coordinator Joshua Oates-Lunn explains that this solar array will significantly reduce the project's use of diesel across its operations.
“It’s really rewarding seeing South Australia’s first 20 kW solar array and battery on site charging our equipment each day,” says Joshua.
“Sustainability and safety are central to all we do on site each day, and our strategy is focused on minimising waste, emissions and the environmental impacts of construction across all our operations.”
The solar array is just one of several first-of-its-kind sustainability initiatives that CPB Contractors has rolled out in recent months. Other notable environmentally focused milestones include:
- Australian-first trials of Hydrogen-fuelled Toyota HiAce in Melbourne, Victoria
- The first construction project in Australia to use a 250-tonne electric crawler crane in Western Sydney, New South Wales.
- Ongoing hybrid generators and Vertical Axis Wind Turbine trials
CPB Contractors is delivering the Main South Road Duplication 2 Project as part of the Fleurieu Connections Alliance with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport, Aurecon and GHD. The project involves construction of a six-kilometre road duplication between Aldinga Road and Sellicks Beach Road, along with urban design, services installation, staging or temporary works, construction of civil and structures, including a new interchange at Aldinga, installation of road monitoring cameras and variable message sign (VMS) board, and landscaping.
