Toney Magner has worked for UGL for 30 years, working across the east coast of Australia. He started his UGL career in Sydney, working as a Team Leader for the bogie shop in Auburn.
“I moved from the production side of the bogie shop to the maintenance coordinator for the site, so I was one of the maintenance coordinators for the site until January 2006,” says Toney.
It was a holiday to Townsville in 2006 that changed everything for Toney. He had lived in the far north Queensland capital years earlier when he was with the Army and decided to request a transfer with UGL.
“I was happy with UGL and if I could stay within the business, it was my preferred option,” says Toney.
The transfer saw him back on the tools as a Boilermaker.
“It was hard work after not being on the tools fully for so long. I was on the tools for about three months then a job came up here in the office in the procurement team,” says Toney.
His previous systems experience made him the perfect person for the job and he was promoted to become a Supply Chain Coordinator.
“I look after the warehouse, procurement, although I’m a liaison for production and central procurement projects,” says Toney.
It has been 18 years since Toney moved to Townsville and there’s one main reason he’s stayed.
“We’re a small site as far as UGL goes and the main factor that influences the stay is the core group of people, the team we work with, and we all socialise together. It is a tight-knit small group that the core employees have been here quite a while now,” says Toney.
