In the heart of Port Hedland, Western Australia, a groundbreaking project is underway – a 35MW/35MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) that promises to reshape the energy landscape. Spearheaded by UGL, which is delivering the work on behalf of Australian energy infrastructure company APA Group as part of a Power Purchase Agreement with BHP to reduce emissions from its WA iron ore port facilities, this project marks a significant step forward in sustainable energy solutions.
The scope of the project encompasses delivery of a BESS, featuring state-of-the-art Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) batteries and Siemens Gamesa inverters. UGL's commitment extends from initial design to procurement, installation, and the crucial commissioning phase. UGL's team mobilised to the site in October 2023, with commissioning anticipated to be completed by September 2024.
As the project progresses, significant milestones are on the horizon. Notably, key equipment deliveries are set to commence in Q1 2024, marking a pivotal step forward. The arrival of battery racks onsite in is a crucial milestone that facilitates completion of construction works and shift into the commissioning phase.
Behind every successful project are individuals whose dedication and expertise drive progress. UGL Design Manager, Amr Beshir, is leading the design phase and has been instrumental in guiding the project through its intricate engineering stages. The procurement team, based in Sydney, has been diligently ensuring that procurement aligns with budget and project timelines. At the project site, our Construction Manager, Chris Fullerton's leadership is instrumental in setting the stage for the successful delivery of this groundbreaking BESS.
“This is an exciting opportunity for UGL to demonstrate our BESS capabilities for one of our key clients,” said Bradley De San Miguel, UGL Project Manager.
“The team has been working hard to ensure progress of the design and procurement and achieve site mobilisation in line with the program.”.
As UGL continues to make strides in the BESS market, the Port Hedland project stands as a testament to our dedication to engineering excellence, innovative solutions, and a sustainable energy future.
