Jwaneng Diamond Mine

Discovered in the Naledi River Valley ‘Valley of the Stars’ in Southern Botswana in 1972, Jwaneng is the richest diamond mine in the world by value.

The mine consists of three separate volcanic pipes with production varying from approximately 12.5 to 15 million carats per year according to mining plans.

Our involvement at Jwaneng is through our shareholding in the Majwe Mining Joint Venture (MMJV), which includes Thiess (70 per cent) and long-term local partner Bothakga Burrow Botswana (30 per cent).

Debswana Diamond Company has embarked on a major expansion project, which includes the Cut 9 Project, for which MMJV is responsible for ongoing operations which extend the life of Jwaneng mine and ensure continuous production until at least 2035.

The Cut 9 project is expected to yield an estimated 53 million carats of rough diamonds from 44 million tonnes of treated material.

Debswana is a partnership between the Government of the Republic of Botswana and the De Beers Diamond Company.
