As a global company, our workforce and supply chain are stronger and realise greater ESG outcomes when they are local. In 2022, in every country where we operate, 93.7% of our people are nationals. 

Our training and talent programs develop local leaders and graduates to ensure the future workforce reflects the regions and countries in which we operate. 

Local employment and skills

We offer local employment and training to many people – including those who are transitioning from other sectors or who have faced barriers such as unemployment and skill gaps.

Our training initiatives include:

  • establishing New South Wales’ first Institute of Applied Technology for Construction in partnership with TAFE NSW and Western Sydney University
  • collaborating with vocational training organisations and universities to develop accelerated courses to upskill our people and cross-skill entrants from other sectors
  • establishing our own training programs and academies to support including our Homebush Training Academy, a specialist facility which has supported CPB Contractors’ delivery of the WestConnex and other major projects in Sydney. 

The scale of the skills legacy we are achieving is reflected in some recent statistics below (as at the end of 2022). These thousands of people now have greater opportunities ahead of them:

  • CPB Contractors has facilitated training to more than 136,000 people in NSW on our major projects since 2016
  • the Homebush Training Academy, in Sydney, has delivered more than 683,000 training hours since 2016, engaging more than 124,000 people
  • the West Gate Tunnel project, in Melbourne, has delivered 63,000 training hours since 2019, engaging more than 11,000 people
  • at the Cross River Rail project, in Brisbane, more than 762,000 training hours have been completed on the project since 2019.
Local business

Local procurement improves supply chain reliability, can help to minimise transport costs, and reduce fuel consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions. 

For the community, our engagement of local suppliers boosts local employment, regional economic growth and local skills and capabilities that will support future development.

Project specific events are held to inform local suppliers of opportunities with major projects. Engagement and alignment activities include our procurement and onboarding process, on-site induction, and training as required for the specific role being undertaken. All subcontractors are required to undertake safety training to ensure compliance with our requirement to provide a safe workplace for workers and visitors to our worksites or workplaces.
